Waking up in Hemmeland
Hemmeland is what you might call the Municipal Wharf. It's owned by the Monnickendam Municipality, lacking the straight lines and over organisation of the commercial marinas. Prettier morning pictures....
By the way...
"Hemland" is the old Dutch designation for - what's probably best translated into - spit. A long narrow accumulation of sand, shingle or mud; one end attached to the land the other projecting into the sea. With one difference, the "Hemland" is always on the sea-side of a dike (outside).
The people living in Monnickendam must've been out of inspiration, because even if the "Hemland" was diked in 1358 (!) the old name stuck. The marina wasn't built until 1975.
