Paard van Marken

Close to home there is this tiny lighthouse called "Het Paard van Marken" (Marken's horse). At night the 16 meter light can be seen from 9 miles away. Exposed to the East, it's famous for wintery pictures with the lighthouse covered by drifting ice. Drifts are so ferocious that they moved the entire structure a few inches off its foundation, since it was constructed in 1839. Before "Het Paard" the 'light' was simply a fire on wooden stakes.
