Pan European

Day -2: Planning

It's about time. Never before, I used the motorcycle for anything else than transportation. Duh! Some say: "from A to B is the only thing you can do with a motorcycle." Well... there are others that actually keep one, as a piece of art, in their living room. I usually stick to the daily commute, but this time I'm talking about the holy grail in motorcycling: "The Motorcycle Tour." Riding for the sake of riding. Riding, not to go from A to B, but to be underway from A to B.
I'm cheating too. Despite the ST1300's nickname ('Honda Samsonite'),  my wife in the car will carry the bulk of the luggage. Anyhow we're going Pan European...

First day will be a dash to get out of the Netherlands. Straight into Maastricht, only to leave the motorway well across the Belgium border. For the last bit to our Bed & Breakfast of choice, secondary roads into the northern part of Luxembourg. I'm betting on this being the point where it starts to feel like A Tour.

 Het werd 's tijd. Nooit eerder heb ik m'n motorfiets gebruikt als iets anders dan een transportmiddel. Duh! Zullen sommigen zeggen; "Van A naar B rijden is het enige dat je kán doen op een motorfiets." Nou... Er zijn anderen die er één in hun huiskamer zetten, als kunststuk. Ik hou het gewoonlijk bij het dagelijkse woon-werk verkeer. Maar ditmaal heb ik het over - wat voor mij is - de 'heilige graal' van motorrijden: 'De Motor Toer'. Rijden om het rijden. Rijden, niet om van A naar B te gaan, maar om van A naar B onderweg te zijn.
Ik smokkel ook nog 's. Ondanks de bijnaam 'Honda Samsonite' die de ST1300 heeft, zal mijn vrouw het merendeel van de bagage met de auto vervoeren. Kan me niets schelen, wij gaan Pan European...

De eerste dag zal in het teken staan van zo snel mogelijk Nederland uit. Rechtstreeks naar Maastricht om de snelweg pas te verlaten als we ruimschoots de Belgische grens zijn gepasseerd. Voor het laatste stuk secundaire wegen naar het noorden van Luxemburg en de Bed & Breakfast van onze keuze. Ik gok erop dat dit zo het punt gaat zijn waar het gaat aanvoelen als een Toertocht.
