Cable car

San Francisco
San Francisco's icon: "The cable car system". They say it's the world's last permanently operational manually operated system. While the cable cars are used by the occasional commuter, they're mainly a tourist attraction, today. The premium fares and limited capacity may play a significant role in that.
Started in 1873, the lines became obsolete in 1979 after a discussion to abandon the system that started in 1947, thirty years earlier... In 1982 the system was closed down for a complete rebuilt and reopened in 1984.
