Renovating Naghsh-e Jahan Mosque
These beautifully tiled domes on 16th century mosques require renovation at some point. Here is how it is done. Indoors, a section of the dome is laid out (mirrored), with the pattern painted on it. A craftsman then places colored - enameled - tiles upside down onto the pattern. To follow the curvature and leave room for mortar, their edges are carefully chiseled. The tiling is cemented in manageable sections and hoisted onto the dome's scaffolding for mounting.
